Being a home barista is a lot of fun, in fact, in many ways it can be more fun than working as a barista in a café! Your choice of equipment, full control over the brew, and of course the freedom to buy any coffee you heart desires.
A great way to complement the discovery of new and exciting coffees as you progress along your coffee journey is to get a coffee subscription!
Coffee subscriptions come in all shapes and sizes, but it’s important to find the right subscription that suits you and your goals in coffee. There are many things to consider when choosing a subscription, such considerations include:
- Pricing (including any extra costs like shipping) 💵
- Roast / Brewing preferences ☕️
- Frequency 🔁
- Variety and selection of coffees 🌱

Whether you’re happy to have the same familiar coffee at home, or you want to discover a range of new varieties and roasters, there are many types of subscription options. Today we’re going to dive into the different types of coffee subscriptions to help you find the perfect match for you. Let’s dive in!
Option #1: Same roaster, same coffee
This option is quite self-explanatory. Simply get the same coffee every month from the same roaster. Often this will be a seasonal blend or “house coffee” aimed at having the same flavour profile throughout the year.
✅ Perfect for: espresso lovers who just want to have a good cup of coffee at home, without having to constantly dial in new coffees every month. Simple, repeatable, and easy to manage.
❌ Avoid if: you want to explore a range of different coffees, or if you like experimenting with pour-overs.
Option #2: Same roaster, different coffee
So you’ve found your favourite roaster, but still want to explore different origins and processes? A subscription from your favourite roaster will help you discover new varieties and processes, and is often a little cheaper than the multi-roaster options. However, due to the seasonality of coffee, it can happen that you’ll get repeated coffees in a row.
✅ Perfect for: espresso and pour-over/ filter lovers since you get to explore different coffees and have fun dialling in new coffees, while getting the consistent quality you expect from your favourite roaster.
❌ Avoid if: you value variety and want to discover different roasting philosophies from roasters all over the world
Option #3: Multi-roaster, different coffee
This option is great for those of you who want to explore the world of specialty coffee, and not only try different origins and processes, but also different roasting philosophies and try new roasters from all over the world! Who knows, you might even discover a new favourite roaster! This option is my personal favourite and also how we’ve set up the Nordic Brew Coffee Club subscriptions.
✅ Perfect for: you want to discover the world of specialty coffee and discover different roasters, processes, and varieties in every box.
❌ Avoid if: you don’t like constantly dialling in new coffees and would prefer having the same trusted coffee in your grinder all the time.

Getting a subscription might seem like a big commitment, but in reality it can take away the struggle of all the time having to decide what coffee to buy, while also discovering new processes, origins, and roasters! Don’t forget there is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a subscription that suits your desires as a home barista, instead it’s up to you to find the subscription that makes you most excited to brew coffee at home. Have you ever considered a subscription before?
